A group of women from the St. Luke Methodist Church (Columbus, Ga.) formed the Columbus Female Asylum in 1840. After the Shepherd family donated their house to serve as a permanent home for this girls' orphanage, it became known as the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home.
